Sandra Bullock In Talks for 'Gravity'

Thursday, October 7, 2010

Some of Hollywood's star leading ladies from Angelina Jolie to Natalie Portman had orbited Alfonso Cuarón's "Gravity" in this year, but none came in for a permanent and perfect landing. Now another A-list name has been added into negotiations for the starring role.

Sandra Bullock is currently in talks regarding the 3-D sci-fi flick. In the thriller, Bullock would play the sole survivor of a disastrous space mission who is attempting to get home to her daughter. Robert Downey Jr. is attached to star as well, though the film is said to focus largely on its female character in a similar way to "Cast Away" centering on Tom Hanks' character of Chuck Noland. Cuarón, who directed "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" and the excellent "Children of Men," penned the script with his son, Jonas.

In February, it appeared that Jolie would sign onto the project, but could not find any room in her schedule, as a result of her commitments to a "Salt" sequel and a Bosnian war flick she's directing. Additionally, The Hollywood Reporter said that Warner Bros. declined to meet Jolie's $20 million asking price. Portman, similarly, could not fit "Gravity" into her schedule. Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively have reportedly shown interest as well.

Now, however, Bullock has jumped to the front of the pack, although it remains to be seen if she can make time for the "Gravity" role. The film would mark her first role since she won the Best Actress Oscar for her turn in "The Blind Side." She's also said to be interested in "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close," an adaptation of the Jonathan Safran Foer novel that would star Hanks.
