Russian Spy Chief Betrayed Anna Chapman

Saturday, November 13, 2010

Anna Chapman's nemesis, the double agent who unmasked a Russian spy and who made waves in America because of her exotic looks and foreign intrigue, was purportedly betrayed by a Russian spy boss who defected to America shortly after betraying her.

Senior officials in Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's government said the double agent identified only as "Colonel Shcherbakov" -- was a devastating blow to Russia's SVR intelligence agency and touched off a probe.

The colonel's role in Russia's foreign intelligence service was plant ing agents deep under cover in potentially hostile Western countries.
He is said to have recently turned down a promotion that would have involved him taking a detailed and revealing lie detector test, the paper adds.

Ms. Chapman was the highest-profile spy whose cover was blown. She has parlayed her high-profile deportation into a celebrity career of sorts, and has modeled for several Russian magazines and media companies.
